WhatsApp 24-Hour Window
The WhatsApp 24-hour window is the period after a customer's last message during which you can send free-form replies — after which only pre-approved message templates can be used.
The Problem
Many businesses do not understand the 24-hour rule and attempt to send free-form messages hours or days after a customer's last message. Meta blocks these messages, and repeated violations can restrict your account.
What WhatsApp 24-Hour Window Actually Is
When a customer sends you a message, a 24-hour "service conversation" window opens. During these 24 hours, you can reply with any free-form message — text, images, documents, location. After the window closes, you can only send messages using pre-approved templates in the marketing, utility, or authentication categories. The window resets every time the customer sends a new message. This is not a Convoup rule — it is a Meta rule enforced at the API level.
Real-World Examples
Customer messages at 2:00 PM on Monday — you can send free-form replies until 2:00 PM on Tuesday. After that, only templates.
Customer messages again at 10:00 AM on Tuesday — the window resets, giving you until 10:00 AM on Wednesday.
Common Mistakes
Not responding within 24 hours — after the window closes, you lose the ability to send free-form messages.
Assuming the window resets when YOU reply — it only resets when the CUSTOMER sends a new message.
Sending marketing templates to contacts who have not opted in for marketing — templates require opt-in.
Expert Note
Convoup shows the remaining window time per conversation, so agents know whether they can send a free-form reply or need to use a template. This prevents failed message attempts.
